Abstract

Purpose: This study is to provide a basic elderly psychology as the result of revealing the relationship among meaning of life, self-esteem and mental health of the elderly and to suggest new direction of the nurse works. Method: A pilot study was conducted to define the measurement scale´s reliability. That was face-to-face interview using structured questionnaire during September 30, 2002 through October 11, 2002. Then, this research´s data was collected from October 14, 2002 to November 15, 2002. The study subjects included the elderly over the age 60 for the total of 200 elderly. They were able to communicate well and agree to this study. Result: There were significant correlation between the meaning of life and self-esteem(r=0.531, p=0.000), meaning of life and mental health (r=0.575, p=0.000), self-esteem and mental health(r=0.575, p=0.000). Conclusion: The correlation among meaning of life, self-esteem and mental health for elderly is statistically significant static relationship. That means someone who has high level of meaning has higher level of self-esteem and furthermore they become a better mental health.
